You can take a look at both the assignment description (annotated) and the rubric used to grade them (also annotated), to see what I envision the 'point' of the assignment to be.
In short: intentionally designed non-exam final projects can be an opportunity for students to apply what they learned in the class, critically and thoughtfully, to a topic of their choice. Such final assessments can also be opportunities for instructors to demonstrate how the knowledge and skills students have gained can be applied in research projects.
